Making places better by co-designing with local young people

Opportunities for happy and healthy childhood development spatially revolve around schools and youth clubs, green spaces and leisure facilities, museums, public transport and many other landmark features. Yet how often do we solicit a young person’s opinion about their built environment?

JTP are placemakers (architects and masterplanners) who care about inclusive community engagement. Over the past 25 years, they have worked on ambitious urban developments across the UK, empowering local communities through their collaborative planning processes.

BlockBuilders has helped JTP to successfully bring community planning into the classroom. Our versatile co-design strategy uses Minecraft™ as a communication and co-creation medium. Young people can dynamically interact with urban plans by playing a video game they know and love.

This tried and tested strategy has been applied by JTP across various projects: Rainham Primary reimagined two apartment buildings, St Swithun’s School generated fresh ideas to enrich communal spaces and Grafton Primary’s greener Holloway Road was exhibited at the London Festival of Architecture.
